    After their 17-day ordeal, the 12 Thai soccer players and coach who had been trapped in a cave have been rescued. Apart from rapid weight loss, all 13 were said to be in decent health, with one boy suffering from a lung infection. The rescue was a multinational affair, with official assistance coming from Britain, the United States, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, China and Australia. Although ultimately successful, the rescue could have been a disaster. Water pumps used to drain the area failed just hours after the last boy had been rescued.

    Korea’s Ministry of Environment recently announced a public hearing on the second stage of its greenhouse gas emission trading system. The current system was implemented in 2014 to induce a reduction of emissions by large-scale businesses such as power generators and steel producers. Over the next three years, the total amount of permitted greenhouse gas emissions will rise 2.1% to over 1.7 billion tons. The change was made to account for growth in certain sectors.

    An upcoming “Super Moon” could exacerbate the effects of Super Typhoon Maria in Korea. Twenty-two areas in Korea are expected to have their weather alert levels increased to “caution.” Of these, the areas of Incheon, Mokpo, Masan, and Seongsanpo are expect to have even higher alert levels. In particular, Incheon is expected to be hardest hit, with tide levels reaching nearly 10 meters. A “Super Moon” occurs when the moon is closest to Earth and due to its close proximity appears much larger than usual.
